Covid-19 WHO changes testing guidelines

Covid-19 WHO changes testing guidelines

As before, the dizzying numbers of positive PCR test results, in particular, frighten us when it comes to Corona. In particular, the PCR test is not suitable for diagnosing an infection, the WHO informed in January 2021.

WHO: Positive PCR tests must be interpreted with caution

On January 20, 2021, the WHO (World Health Organization) updated its guidelines to interpret PCR tests (1). The guidelines are intended for all doctors, clinics, and healthcare professionals and, therefore, for everyone who conducts and evaluates PCR tests. In the guidelines, it now says z. For example, you should manually adjust the threshold value from which a test result is considered positive. According to the WHO, products that are "just about" still positive must be interpreted very carefully.

A positive PCR test is worthless without symptoms

The Ct value, which indicates the number of cycles in the PCR test, is essential. The higher the number of processes, the lower the respective person's viral load. We explain what the Ct value and the number of cycles are all about in our PCR test article at the very end under "What is done with the Corona PCR test."

A PCR test can therefore be positive - and you still do not know whether the person who tested positive now carries a lot of viruses (and maybe contagious) or whether there are only very few virus components that are only due to a high number of cycles were greatly multiplied that finally, a positive test result came out.

For this reason, the WHO now specifies the following: If the test result does not match the health status of the person tested (if it is positive but looks bright and has no symptoms), a new test must be carried out.

Test results depend on the frequency of the disease

The WHO also reminds the testers that an illness's frequency changes the meaningfulness of test results. As soon as the frequency decreases, the risk of false-positive test results increases. It means the probability that a person who tested positive is infected with SARS-CoV2 declines the rarer the disease is - no matter how high the specificity of the test may be.

The PCR test is only one part of a comprehensive diagnosis

According to the WHO, PCR tests are nothing more than aids in diagnostics. Therefore, doctors and clinics should only use each test result in connection with other factors for diagnosis. So you should check whether the person who tested positive has symptoms at all and whether he has had contact with someone suffering from Covid-19. Pre-existing illnesses would have to be occupied into account, the type of sample taken for the PCR test, the time at which the piece was born, and the respective examination specifications.

A positive PCR test is not enough to determine infection tockhop

Assuming an infection based on a positive PCR test alone seems to be anything but correct - as the WHO has now also recognized. But that is precisely what has been the case for months, yes, since the beginning of the so-called pandemic. Day after day, we are provided with the latest "infection numbers," which represent nothing more than the number of people who have a positive test result, which means that more or fewer virus fragments could be detected in the smear, but without knowing whether they were Parts of the virus are still active or not, whether they can make you sick or not, let alone whether they are contagious or not.

Suppose the new WHO guidelines for PCR testing are implemented in the future. In that case, we will most likely experience an abrupt drop in the number of topics / new infections, although the population's state of health has not changed. Indeed, we will then be told that this is the result of the vaccination.
